There are a number of ways in which we can protect ourselves from hurt, or even delude ourselves about how good is our thinking, or, we can purposefully sabotage our efforts. Some of these ways are deliberate, but others may be sub-conscious. These often relate to something that happened in the past.
Some of these ways of operating cause little damage, but others – if used rigidly or persistently – can sabotage our whole thinking process and distort our vision of real threats, permit impulse gratification and obscure us from seeing the whole picture. This will hold us back from time efficiency or indeed effectiveness.”
We have devised some coping techniques that help our thinking and provide self-protection against painful experiences-especially when the issue is important to us.”
